Lawn Mower Engine

There may be occasions that after getting your lawn mower out of the shed to cut the grass in your garden you find that it won’t start.   Yes you could arrange to have someone come and sort the problem out for you with your lawn mower engine.  But in many cases there are a few simple things that you can do which may help you to identify and then repair the problem yourself.

The first thing that you should be doing whether you own a John Deere Lawn Mower or a Snapper Lawn Mower is to disconnect the spark plug.  So ensuring that once you start work on trying to solve the problem the engine will not start.  It is better to spend a few seconds on carrying this out rather than you ending up being rushed to hospital minus a couple of fingers.  Another thing to ensure that you are safe when working on a lawn mower engine is to wear some protective gloves.

After you have disconnected the spark plug then inspect this first before you start taking apart the engine.  By looking at the condition the spark plug is in can often provide you with clues as to what the problem is with the engine in your lawn mower.  Is there oil all over the plug or is there lots of dirt and debris on it.

If however there is nothing significantly wrong with the spark plug in your John Deere Lawn Mower then the next thing to inspect is its ignition system.  When inspecting the system check to see how much gap there is between the magneto and the flywheel.  If there is no gap then of course this is the reason for your lawn mower being unable to start.

Another thing which can be causing your lawn mower engine having difficulties starting is if the carburettor is dirty.  It is therefore important that following each use you actually remove and clean this.  Also if you are intending to store your lawn mower away for the winter then drain all gasoline from the engine before doing so.  If the gasoline remains in the engine then it will hardened round the carburettor so when it comes time to cleaning it later on this will prove very difficult indeed.
